Experience, innovation and the pursuit of performance

The latest issue of Made for the Water takes us inside the world of Stayinphase, exploring the experience, engineering and ambition that sit behind its bespoke winch systems and marine innovations.

At the heart of the journal is Argo, the MOD70 trimaran that brought Stayinphase back to San Diego after a 14-year absence. Commissioned to design, manufacture and fit a substantial refit, the team faced a demanding brief: reduce friction and system backlash while improving performance and reliability, with limited information from the original build.

The solution involved rethinking the entire system. Winch and hydraulic controls were centralised back into the cockpit, while extensive shafts, chain drives and gears were replaced with a more intuitive mechanically automated driveline.

The results were significant. Following the refit, Argo completed 10,000 hard ocean miles with zero maintenance and went on to achieve a remarkable 40% reduction in the TransPac record, setting a new time of 7 days, 18 hours and 23 minutes.

Taking time to reflect

Returning to San Diego also gave Stayinphase founder Jon Williams an opportunity to look back.

Fourteen years earlier, Jon had been part of the BMW Oracle Racing team, using San Diego as a training and development base while working towards the 33rd America’s Cup.

His reflections provide a personal connection between Stayinphase’s past and present — from the long days spent transforming USA17 into an America’s Cup-winning machine, to returning years later with his own company to work on another iconic trimaran.
