Every yacht tells a story.
Some are written through decades of ocean racing, others through meticulous craftsmanship and engineering innovation. The latest issue of Made for the Water brings both together, offering an exclusive look inside Stayinphase and the specialist engineering that has earned the company its reputation among racing teams, superyacht owners and classic yacht restorers worldwide.
Drawing on decades of experience at the highest levels of competitive sailing, Stayinphase designs, manufactures and installs bespoke winch systems and sail handling solutions that combine performance, reliability and exceptional attention to detail. This issue explores the philosophy behind the company, the engineering processes that set it apart, and one of its most fascinating restoration projects to date.
Restoring a Classic, Reimagining Performance
The centrepiece of this edition is the restoration of Blitzen, a beautifully preserved 1938 Bermudan sloop whose rich racing history presented an extraordinary engineering challenge.
Commissioned to replace the yacht’s ageing winch system, the Stayinphase team embarked on a project that demanded far more than manufacturing expertise. Historical research, archival investigation and forensic engineering were all required to understand decades of modifications before designing a completely bespoke solution.
Rather than recreating the original mechanism, Stayinphase developed a modern winch system that honours the yacht’s Art Deco-era styling while incorporating the advanced engineering principles refined through years of America’s Cup and elite racing experience. The result is a seamless balance of heritage aesthetics and contemporary performance.
Engineering Built for the Water
The journal also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the engineering standards that underpin every Stayinphase product. From temperature-controlled metrology and precision machining to rigorous load testing and hand-built assembly, every component is designed to perform under the demanding conditions of offshore racing and superyacht sailing.
This commitment extends beyond performance. By designing products for longevity rather than replacement, Stayinphase creates marine engineering solutions that are both sustainable and exceptionally reliable.
